A new study has found a shocking link between the birth control injection Depo-Provera and a higher risk of brain tumors in some women.

With over 74 million users worldwide, this news comes as a devastating discovery, sparking widespread concern about the health of millions of women.

These rare tumors can dangerously press on the brain, often needing surgery or other treatments to relieve the intense pressure on sensitive brain tissue. If you developed a brain tumor after taking this medication, you may qualify for a Depo-Provera lawsuit.

Many women turned to Depo-Provera for birth control protection, only to now learn it may carry a heightened risk of brain tumors, a crushing betrayal of their trust and health.

What Is Depo-Provera?

Depo-Provera, also known as medroxyprogesterone acetate, is a contraceptive injection given every 3 months. It contains progesterone, a hormone that stops ovulation, which means the ovaries won’t release eggs, thus preventing pregnancy. It also thickens the cervical mucus to block sperm.

People choose Depo-Provera for various reasons. It’s a good option if you don’t want to take a birth control pill every day or for those who can’t take estrogen. It’s also prescribed to treat medical conditions, like:

It also reduces menstrual cramps and flow. However, despite these benefits, Depo-Provera could have a major downside: some worry it could be connected to brain tumors.

What Company Makes Depo-Provera?

Depo-Provera is manufactured by Pfizer, one of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies. The company first introduced the medication in the 1960s for menstruation, and it was approved as a birth control method in the 1990s.

Does Depo-Provera Cause Brain Tumors?

Recent research suggests a potential link between Depo-Provera and an increased risk of brain tumors. The study published in the BMJ discovered that using Depo-Provera for more than a year may elevate the risk of a certain brain tumor called intracranial meningioma by 5.6 times.

This type of tumor, while usually non-cancerous, develops in the layers of the tissue covering the brain and spinal cord.

Researchers also found that two other drugs used for menopause relief were also tied to an increased risk of brain tumors. However, Depo-Provera showed the highest association among them.

Drugs Linked to Intracranial Meningiomas

The study warned that using Depo-Provera increases the risk of this type of brain tumor from 4 per thousand women to 20 per thousand by age 80.

However, researchers did stress that their study only shows a possible connection and not a direct cause-and-effect relationship between the drugs and brain tumors. More research is needed to understand exactly why drugs like Depo-Provera may increase the risk of brain tumors.

So, can Depo-Provera cause tumors? There is no definitive answer as of right now, but current research suggests that there may be a potential link between the injection and brain tumors.

About the Depo-Provera Brain Tumors Study

French researchers looked at the health data from over 18,000 women who underwent surgery for intracranial meningioma between 2008 and 2019 in France. These women were compared to a group of women who did not have brain tumors.

The study focused on drugs containing progestogens, synthetic hormones similar to natural progesterone, commonly used in contraceptives and treatments for conditions like endometriosis. Also, it reviewed different delivery methods, such as oral, vaginal, and injection.

Can I File a Depo-Provera Brain Tumor Lawsuit?

The warning label for Depo-Provera talks about many risks but fails to mention anything about brain tumors, a very serious side effect that every patient deserves to know about.

You may be eligible to file a Depo-Provera brain tumor lawsuit if you:

Removing a tumor can be challenging work since the brain is very delicate, and tumors can develop in tricky locations that make their extraction difficult. The surgery expenses and medical bills that pile up after such a major operation can quickly overwhelm you.

An Experienced Dangerous Drug Injury Attorney Can Help

Taking on giant pharmaceutical companies is no easy task. Oftentimes, these companies have their own legal team to protect them, plus the money and resources to push back on legal claims against them.

In fact, a survey conducted by Martindale-Nolo found that more than nine out of ten people who had a lawyer were able to get a settlement or award, while only about half of those who tried to handle their own injury claims were successful.

Working with a defective drug lawyer can greatly improve your chances of filing a successful case, ensuring you hold companies accountable for neglecting to warn users about all of the risks. These companies have a duty to fully test and vet these drugs before putting them on the market.
