The Claims Behind a Toxic Baby Food Lawsuit

When you buy a product for your baby that’s readily available on a store shelf, you expect it to be safe. Unfortunately, lawsuits filed by families across the country argue that baby food manufacturers allegedly knew for years that their products were contaminated with dangerous levels of heavy metals.

Families across the country are now filing lawsuits, claiming that despite this knowledge, companies failed to warn parents or take action to remove these harmful substances from their products.

The lawsuits focus on four toxic metals:

Even small amounts of these metals can interfere with how a child’s brain develops. Exposure during key stages of growth may affect attention, memory, learning ability, and behavior.

How Heavy Metals in Baby Food May Be Harming Children’s Brain Development

One major study found that environmental toxins like lead were responsible for the loss of over 40 million IQ points in children across the United States. That number is greater than the total IQ loss caused by preterm birth, brain injuries, and childhood brain tumors combined.

Babies are more vulnerable to these toxic metals because their bodies process food differently than adults. Babies eat more food for their size, absorb more of what they eat, and can’t get rid of toxins as easily. This makes it much more likely for toxic metals to build up in their system, especially when baby food is consumed daily, sometimes multiple times a day.

Baby Food and Autism

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental condition that affects how a child communicates, interacts, and experiences the world around them. While the exact causes of autism are still being studied, growing evidence links exposure to toxic heavy metals during early development with an increased risk of developing autism.

Heavy metals like lead and arsenic are known to disrupt the way brain cells grow and connect.

Lawsuits claim that exposure to toxic baby food during infancy may have played a role in some autism diagnoses. For families, that means years of therapy, behavioral support, special education needs, and medical expenses.

Toxic Baby Food and ADHD

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a condition that affects a child’s ability to focus, sit still, and control impulses. It’s one of the most common developmental disorders in children, and like autism, it may be influenced by early environmental exposures.

In toxic baby food lawsuits, families claim that the hidden presence of these metals in baby food contributed to ADHD diagnoses and behavioral problems that have lasted into school age and beyond.

Outside of ADHD and autism, heavy metals in baby food may also contribute to:

Many families rightfully feel blindsided by this emerging information. Millions of parents trusted these brands, and now we’re learning they may have put our kids at risk. If your child is living with autism, ADHD, or other developmental delays, and you’re wondering if baby food played a role, we’re here to help you get answers.

Major Brands Tied to Contaminated Baby Food

The risks of toxic baby food became widely known after a 2021 report from the U.S. House of Representatives Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy. The investigation revealed that several of the nation’s top baby food brands were selling products contaminated with dangerous levels of heavy metals.

According to the report, many of these companies had internal standards for toxic metals that were alarmingly high, far above what the FDA considers safe, even for drinking water.

Brands named in the report include:

These findings have become a central part of the toxic baby food lawsuit now being filed by families nationwide.

The Congressional Report on Tainted Baby Food

The U.S. House Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy launched an investigation in 2019. They reviewed internal documents and lab test results from some of the biggest baby food manufacturers in the country.

The report published in 2021 revealed that many popular baby foods contained dangerous levels of toxic heavy metals known to harm a child’s developing brain.

Here’s what the investigation discovered:

Arsenic

Every company had products containing arsenic:

Lead

Lead was found in all brands tested:

Cadmium

This toxic metal was also found across the board:

Mercury

Shockingly, only Nurture (HappyBABY) tested for mercury.

Their results showed levels as high as 10 ppb, five times the EPA’s limit for mercury in drinking water (2 ppb).

These findings have shaken the trust parents once had in these well-known brands.

Attorney General Launches Investigation Into Toxic Baby Food

The concern over toxic heavy metals in baby food has drawn attention beyond Congress, reaching state officials as well. In August 2025, the Texas Attorney General opened a significant investigation into baby food manufacturers suspected of violating consumer protection laws by marketing and selling products containing unsafe levels of heavy metals.

As part of this inquiry, Attorney General Paxton has issued Civil Investigative Demands to companies like Gerber and Plum Organics, seeking internal documents and details about their safety testing and quality control practices. This action underscores the ongoing commitment of legal authorities to hold these companies accountable and protect families.
