James joins Meshbesher & Spence from a Minnesota-based civil litigation firm, where he was a partner. He has specialized in civil litigation throughout his career and is certified as a Civil Trial Specialist by the Minnesota State Bar Association. His work includes representing clients in both Minnesota and Wisconsin.
A native of Litchfield, Minnesota, James brings a broad range of professional experience to his legal work. Prior to practicing law, his background included service as a First Lieutenant in the United States Army from 1966 to 1969, management roles in federal and state government, work as a staff aide to the governor of Minnesota, construction work, and firefighting as a smoke jumper for the U.S. Forest Service. He has also maintained a lifelong interest in aviation and has held a private pilot license since 1985.
James is highly regarded by both clients and fellow attorneys. He maintains a busy workers’ compensation and personal injury practice and receives numerous referrals from attorneys in other specialties. He is active in the Academy of Certified Trial Lawyers of Minnesota and has served as a board member, officer, and dean of that organization. He is rated AV by Martindale-Hubbell, the highest rating for ethical standards and legal ability, and is also qualified to serve as a neutral arbitrator and mediator.
James has been voted a Super Lawyer® in the areas of personal injury and workers’ compensation in annual polls conducted by Minnesota Law & Politics and Mpls/St. Paul magazine. He was invited to membership in the American Society of Legal Advocates and was named Attorney of the Year in 2012 by The Minnesota Lawyer.
Outside of his legal work, James continues to challenge himself through new pursuits, including working on his Wisconsin cabin, learning to speak Russian, and learning to play the piano.
