Onglyza (Saxagliptin) and Kombiglyze XR (Saxagliptin/Metformin) are Type-2 diabetes drugs intended to help control blood sugar levels. A recent clinical trial, however, concluded that users of Onglyza and Kombiglyze XR are more likely to suffer from heart failure. Onglyza users have filed lawsuits alleging AstraZeneca, the manufacturer of Onglyza and Kombiglyze XR, failed to warn users of the increased risk of heart failure. People who have suffered from heart failure while taken Onglyza or Kombiglyze XR may be entitled to substantial compensation for their injuries.

Clinical Trials Find Onglyza and Kombiglyze XR Increase the Risk of Heart Failure
A recent clinical trial evaluated 16,492 Type-2 diabetics to determine the safety and efficacy of Onglyza. The trial is known as the SAVOR Study. The SAVOR study found that people taking Onglyza were 27% more likely to require hospitalization for heart failure compared to people who did not take Onglyza. Dr. Benjamin Scirica, the SAVOR Principle Investigator, said this about alarming results:
โThough unexpected, the incremental risk of heart failure hospitalizations observed with saxagliptin is likely validโฆโ
In addition to the increased risk of heart failure, Onglyzaโs efficacy has also recently come into question. Express Scripts, the largest U.S. pharmacy benefit manager, recently decided to exclude Onglyza and Kombiglyze XR from insurance coverage because the drugs cost more than comparable products, but have shown no additional benefit beyond other drugs that are more affordable.
FDA Advisory Committee
Following the release of the SAVOR study, the FDA formed an Advisory Committee of 15 members to evaluate Onglyza. At the conclusion of the meeting, 14 of the members recommended Onglyza and Kombiglyze XR should have a label that warns users of heart failure. The remaining Committee member recommended AstraZeneca should stop selling Onglyza and Kombiglyze XR. To date, the labels of Onglyza and Kombiglyze XR still do not warn people of the increased risk of heart failure.
