The Safest 2014/2015 cars on the road

No matter what you’re driving, being on the road is dangerous. An estimated 6,800 people died in motor car accidents in the first quarter of 2014 alone, according to recent data from the National Center for Statistics and Analysis (NCSA), an office of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Although we can’t control other drivers on the road, we can make decisions (such as wearing a seatbelt and practicing defensive driving) that can help reduce the risk of injury and death.

Choosing a car that has been tested and proven to be safe by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) is a step in the right direction.

CRITERIA FOR IIHS’ SAFETY TESTS

The IIHS has two special designations for vehicles that have been proven to be the safest: Top Safety Pick (TSP) and Top Safety Pick+ (TSP+). Vehicles awarded these classifications have met the following safety standards, according to IIHS:

To qualify for 2014 Top Safety Pick, a vehicle must earn good ratings in the moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests, as well as a good or acceptable rating in the small overlap front test.

To qualify for 2014 Top Safety Pick+, a vehicle must meet the Top Safety Pick criteria, plus earn a basic, advanced or superior rating for front crash prevention.

Note: These ratings are based on each vehicle’s respective size category. Because larger, heavier vehicles generally provide more protection than smaller, lighter ones, a small car that’s a Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ isn’t necessarily guaranteed to provide superior protection over a larger car that didn’t receive an award.
