Poligrip Lawsuits allege chronic ingestion of zinc may cause neurological problems
Poligrip, the popular denture adhesive cream by GlaxoSmithKline, may leave its users with serious and potentially disabling injuries as a result of the high zinc levels contained in the denture cream.
Poligrip lawsuits blame the denture adhesive cream Poligrip for neurological damage including:- Difficulty Walking
- Muscle Weakness
- Loss of Sensation or Numbness
- Paralysis
A Poligrip lawsuit alleges that the manufacturer, GlaxoSmithKline, failed to warn consumers about the risks associated with chronic ingestion of zinc. While GlaxoSmithKline continues to stand by their product, they announced on February 22, 2010 that they will be removing the zinc from new Poligrip formulations.
The FDA's recommended daily allowances for zinc are 8 mg per day for women and 11 mg per day for men. Zinc levels over 25 mg daily may result in anemia and copper deficiency.
A 2008 study from the American Academy of Neurology indicated that regular denture cream users may be exposed to 330 mg daily. Moreover, these studies found a link between the zinc in denture creams and serious neurologic disease in cases of "chronic excessive use" of these types of denture creams.
According to The American Dental Association, if dentures fit properly, only a tiny amount of dental adhesive cream is necessary. If a person is using more than a small amount, It is more than likely his or her dentures do not fit properly.
